Get Paid To Write Fiction, Short Stories and Poetry

Have you always thought that you would love to write a book one day? Well, what about a short story or a poem?

The People's Friend

The People's Friend have helpfully provided a tips sheet on each type of piece they're looking for from short stories to pocket novels..

Pay: How much you will get paid to write for them depends on how long you've been writing for The People's Friend. New writers start at £80 but move up to £110 after 6 successful submissions. It's £150 for each instalment of a serial. Pocket novels and "long reads" – £300. Poems – £15 per poem.

One Story

One Story is looking for literary fiction and accepts and pays for stories between 3,000 and 8,000 words.

Pay: $500

Zizzle

Zizzle will pay you to write fiction that appeals to kids from age 11 through to adults. The length of the story should be between 500 and 1,200 words.

Pay: $100 for each accepted flash fiction piece.

The Arcanist

The Arcanist will pay you to write micro stories.

Pay: $10 for 100 words.

Flash Fiction online accept original fiction between 500 and 1,000 words long.

 Pay: $60 per story for original fiction.

Craft Literary

Craft publish new and republished fiction, critical pieces on craft, interviews, book annotations, and much more.

Pay: They pay their authors $100 for original flash fiction and $200 for original short fiction.

The Sun Magazine

The Sun Magazine is looking to pay writers for non-fiction pieces, fiction and poetry.

Pay: Non-fiction – $300 to $2,000
Fiction – $300 to $2,000
Poetry – $100 to $250

Fireside Magazine

Fireside Fiction Company is a short-story magazine. They have a goal of publishing great stories regardless of genre.

Pay: 12.5 cents per word. For illustrations, they pay $400 for a full-colour piece.

Asimov's Science Fiction

Asimov's Science Fiction magazine publishes science fiction stories.

They tend to pay for stories that are between 1,000 words and 20,000 words. While poetry should not exceed 40 lines.

Pay: 8-10 cents per word for short stories up to 7,500 words, and 8 cents for each word over 7,500. They pay $1 per line for poetry.

Get paid to share your story

There are lots of publications and websites out there that pay to print your personal story.

There are a couple of different options. I've included the "sell your story" type features where you get paid to tell your story but someone else will write it. They will probably take photos of you or ask you to provide photos to include in the feature.

Or there are websites that accept and pay for real-life stories and anecdotes written by you.

Reader's Digest

Send the world-famous Reader's Digest a true story about you, in 100 words or less.

Pay: $100.

Readers Digest Asia

Readers Digest Asia have a couple of categories where they are looking for writers:

• inspiring stories or life-changing experiences – 800-1,000 words, they pay $250 for published stories
• acts of kindness – 100-500 words, pay up to $100
• anecdotes and jokes – pay $50 – 100
• tales of your amazing animals – up to 300 words, pay up to $100

Bella Magazine

Share your personal story with Bella Magazine and earn up to £1,000.

Send them a brief outline and someone from the Bella features team will contact you to check the details.

Or you could share your views in a letter and win £50 if you're chosen as the star letter.

Take A Break

Sell your story to Take A Break magazine and you could earn up to £2,000.

They have an online story form to use as a guide and to send them a brief outline.

Real People Magazine

Share your story with Real People Magazine and they will pay you an agreed fee on publication.

They will do a full interview with you (usually over the phone) and ask you to provide relevant photographs.

Introvert Dear

You can earn money writing articles and blog posts on a variety of subjects. In fact below, is a list of blogs covering topics from parenting, travel, business, blogging, outdoor activities and more.

They want to hear the experiences, advice and views of people within the outdoors community.

Pay: between £50 – £100

Central Coast Journal

Central Coast Journal is looking for upbeat, feel-good articles concerning nostalgia, local personality profiles, subtle humour, travel, book reviews, entertainment and health.

Length of articles should be between 600 – 1,400 words.

Pay: They pay $75 for articles published under 850-word count with artwork or photos and $100 for articles over the 850-word count with artwork or photos.

Travel Writer's Life

They would like to hear from people who have been successful in travel writing, photography, the import/export business, or running their own tours and would like to share insider tips of your craft.

Pay: $50-$75 for articles published on the website, $100 – $150 for interviews and personal stories, and $150 -$200 for articles with specific income advice a reader can print and follow to earn more income.

The Overtake

They are looking for original stories covering social issues, insights into other people's lives, a close up on an emerging trend in popular culture, and investigations.

Pay: £50 per article

A Fine Parent

A Fine Parent is an online community for parents and they are looking for articles of between 1,500 – 3,000 words range.

Pay: $75

The UK Domain

The UK Domain covers the following topics: blogging, brand building, business growth, e-commerce, getting a job, personal branding, SEO, social media, retail, business and tech news, innovations, thought pieces, personal experience pieces, and technology.

Pay:

• Mini-articles (400-600 words) – £50
• Articles (600-1,500 words) – £100
• Features (1,500+ words) – £150

Wanderlust

Wanderlust is a travel magazine and has a number of different categories open to submissions, from destination features to pocket guides.

Pay: Current rates for most magazine features are £220 per 1,000 published words. Fact pages are paid at £90 per page (approx 750 words) pro-rated. Fees for other sections (including Pocket Guides, Dispatches and interviews) are set per-article rates, agreed on commissioning.

101 Holidays

If you are a travel writer, 101 Holidays would like to hear from you. However, they do also offer an internship programme for those starting out on a part-time remote basis.

Pay: between £50 and £100 per article published, depending on its length and complexity.

Our Times

Our Times is Canada's independent Labour magazine, as such, they do generally prefer Canadian-based stories.

They have three main subject areas: features, poetry and working for a living.

Pay: they generally pay at least $100 for short stories and smaller features up to 1,500 words, $200 to $300 for longer features, and $25 for smaller items. They pay $50 for reviews.

The Green Parent

They are looking for articles on the following topics: Pregnancy and Conscious Birth, Breastfeeding, Family Life and Simple Living, Alternative Education, Natural Health and Beauty, Green Travel, Feeding a Family, Gardening, Particularly Growing Your Own and Sustainable Fashion.

A full length article should be 1,500 – 2,000 words and short opinion pieces should be 600 words.

Pay: £75 per 1,000 words

The Stay at Home Mum

The Stay at Home Mum is looking for articles of between 600 – 800 words.   Topics to consider include: Parenting Topics or Issues, Disability or Autism Spectrum, Birth and Breastfeeding, Family and Relationships, Saving Money, Online Business Startups, Christmas Food, Christmas Crafts, Christmas Meal Plans, Fitness and Beauty, Cooking and Homemaking, Crafting – phew!

Pay: $50

Zimmerit

Zimmerit is looking for posts that have some connection to Japanese fan culture of the '70s, '80s, or '90s. For example, articles about anime, model kits, toys, fandom, and doujinshi although don't be afraid to send them off-the-wall ideas too.

Pay: $40

Advocate

The Advocate is the Graduate Center's sole student newspaper. It is read by City University of New York graduate students and is a source of news and information pertaining to their rights and educational, cultural, and professional interests.

Pay: earn $100 – $120 for articles that are around 1,500 – 2,000 words, and about $150 – $200 for longer essays. Other contributions such as reviews and photo essays are also paid at competitive rates.

Self-Publishing School

They are looking for writers who are passionate about writing, publishing, marketing, and business. You fill out a form and if you meet their criteria you will be sent a list of pre-determined topics to write about.

Pay: $150 per blog post that meets our submission guidelines and is between 1,800 and 2,500 words in length.

Writer's Weekly

Writer's Weekly are looking for articles on how to make money writing, home-based businesses and self-employment that may result from writing, such as self-publishing, corporate writing, ghostwriting, etc.

Pay: Feature articles – $60 for approximately 600 words, Freelance Success Story – $40 for approximately 400 words.

Freelance Mom

Freelance Mom is looking for writers who can offer current practical and actionable advice. Guest articles should be between 900 to 1,500 words.

Three types of articles do well on their website:

• Personal articles
• Researched articles
• Guides on specific systems, tools or processes.

Pay: between $75 to $100 plus if your article is at the top of their most shared for the month, you'll be the winner of a special bonus of $150.

The Barefoot Writer

The Barefoot Writer has several types of article it is looking for:

• Monthly Motivator (600-800 words) – inspire their readers to keep writing and pursue their goals.
• Productivity Secrets (400-600 words) help our readers get more done in less time.
• Cool Tools (400-600 words) are short articles about useful software, hardware, and other gadgets that will help readers like you to write, work, and land more freelance writing jobs.
• Thinking Like a Writer (700-900 words) teaches our readers how to start or grow their writing or freelance careers.
• Become a Better Writer (700-900 words) is about improving our readers' writing skills.
• Glicken (600-800 words) is a personal essay with photos on how your writing helped you get a little something extra out of life.

Sitepoint

SitePoint publishes articles for web developers, designers and entrepreneurs.

Pay: not specified but does say that they "pay our writers above industry rates for their work."

Cracked

Rank Pay is currently looking for talented copywriters who can cover the following topics:

Earn Money Writing For Revenue Sharing Websites

The websites that I've listed above pay a flat fee to you for writing an article, story, blog post or poem.

But there are sites that will pay you based on the number of views your post receives.

In other words, you will share in the revenue that your post generates usually through advertising.
